What to Expect During Your Annual Gynecology Exam

In addition to checking your weight, and blood pressure, your gynecologist will review your general health, menstrual cycle, and sexual activity. During the exam, your gynecologist will conduct the following tests.

Breast Exam

Your gynecologist will check for lumps or other irregularities using a structured pattern. You may also receive instructions on performing self-examinations at home.

Pelvic Exam

During the pelvic exam, your gynecologist will assess your vagina, cervix, and reproductive organs. After you position your feet on the footrests of the examination table and slide forward, the doctor will insert a speculum to gently open the vaginal walls. The doctor will then place one or two gloved, lubricated fingers into your vagina while pressing on your abdomen to evaluate the size, position, and shape of your internal pelvic organs. The exam may feel slightly uncomfortable but should not be painful.

Pap Smear

A Pap smear screens for abnormal cervical cells that could lead to cancer. Your gynecologist will use a small cotton-tipped swab to collect a sample of cervical cells, which are sent to a lab for testing. The procedure is quick and painless.
