Fibroid Treatment in Garden City, MI

Minimally Invasive Uterine Fibroid Removal

Uterine fibroids can cause symptoms that interfere with your daily life. About 20% to 80% of women develop fibroids by the time they reach the age of 50. If you’ve been diagnosed with fibroids, your OB-GYN may recommend removing them surgically, especially if you are planning to have children, as fibroids can cause fertility problems.

Women’s Healthcare & Beyond provides testing and treatment for uterine fibroids at our women’s health clinic in Garden City, MI. We are conveniently located near Garden City Hospital and a short drive from The University of Michigan.

When is Fibroid Surgery Needed?

Women whose fibroids do not cause symptoms may not need treatment. However, your physician may recommend periodic ultrasounds to monitor fibroid growth. Uterine fibroids often shrink on their own as hormone levels change during menopause.

If fibroids cause pain, our gynecologists can prescribe medications to relieve pelvic pressure and reduce bleeding. While medications cannot eliminate fibroids, they may shrink them or stop their growth to provide relief.

For women with exceptionally large fibroids, surgery may be the only option for relief. At Women’s Healthcare & Beyond, we can remove fibroids through:

  • Myomectomy: A procedure that removes only the fibroids, leaving the healthy tissue of the uterus intact. This option is ideal for women who want to have children after surgery.
  • Hysterectomy: A procedure to remove the entire uterus. This option ensures no more fibroids will grow but leaves a woman unable to have children.

Myomectomy Surgery

Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths found inside the uterus or its walls. While many women with fibroids experience no symptoms, others may face moderate to severe symptoms like pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, infertility, and miscarriages.

Fibroids are often diagnosed during a routine pelvic exam. To understand the size and location of fibroids, your doctor may perform additional tests such as an ultrasound, which uses soundwaves to create images of the fibroids. The information from these tests helps your doctor recommend the best treatment plan for you.

Understanding Your Options

Depending on the severity of your fibroid symptoms, your doctor may recommend a wait-and-see approach or prescribe medications to shrink the fibroids. Other options for shrinking fibroids include:

  • Using heat or cold to destroy fibroids.
  • Cutting off the blood supply to the fibroids (embolization).

If symptoms are disrupting your life, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove the fibroids:

  • Myomectomy: Removes fibroids while leaving the uterus intact, allowing the possibility to still have children in the future. However, there is a chance new fibroids may grow.
  • Hysterectomy: Removes the uterus entirely, eliminating the risk of future fibroids.

Minimally Invasive Approaches to Fibroid Removal

Fibroid removal surgery can be performed using minimally invasive techniques:

  • Vaginal (Hysteroscopic) Myomectomy: This method involves removing the fibroids through the vagina using a lighted scope and specialized instruments. It doesn’t require incisions, but the location and size of the fibroids will determine if this is a viable option.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery: Performed through small incisions in the abdomen. Surgeons use special long-handled tools and view magnified images from a laparoscope (camera) on a video screen.
