Key Cervical Cancer Statistics
The following statistics highlight the importance of early detection through regular screenings:
- The overall 5-year survival rate is 68%.
- The overall 10-year survival rate is 64%.
- Early-stage 5-year survival rate is 92% (when cancer is confined to the cervix).
- Mid-stage 5-year survival rate drops to 57% (when cancer spreads to nearby tissue).
- Advanced-stage 5-year survival rate is only 17% (when cancer spreads to distant parts of the body).
Since survival rates decrease dramatically as cancer progresses, early detection is critical.
Prevention & Early Detection
There are two key methods to reduce the risk of cervical cancer:
HPV Vaccination
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. Approximately 90% of men and 80% of women who are sexually active will have at least one type of HPV. Types 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases.
HPV vaccinations provide nearly 100% protection against these high-risk types. Ideally, the vaccine should be administered before becoming sexually active.
Pap Tests
Pap tests are typically recommended for women aged 21 to 65. During the test, your gynecologist will collect a sample of cervical tissue to check for any abnormalities. Early detection can prevent the development of cervical cancer.
Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer may not cause symptoms in its early stages, but warning signs can include:
- Irregular bleeding (between periods or after intercourse)
- Unusual vaginal discharge
Advanced-stage cervical cancer symptoms may include:
- Back pain
- Pelvic pain
- Difficulty urinating
