How to Protect Against HPV

Since most HPV infections resolve on their own without symptoms, prevention is key. To reduce your risk of infection, you can:

  • Use condoms during intercourse (though HPV can infect areas not covered by condoms)
  • Practice safe sex or monogamy
  • Get tested for STDs regularly
  • Get screened for cervical cancer
  • Get vaccinated

HPV Vaccination

The Gardasil and Cervarix vaccines are the most effective protection against HPV-related cancer and infection. Vaccination is recommended for children aged 11 to 12 in two doses, six to twelve months apart. For those older than 14, three doses over six months are recommended.

The vaccine is also advised for women up to age 26 and men up to age 21. Individuals with weakened immune systems should get vaccinated up to age 26. While the vaccine cannot cure an existing HPV infection, it can prevent future infections. Regular STD and Pap tests remain important even after vaccination.
